I like the retro's but honestly I think its time to change the regulars.
Be nice to have our mains from this century... |

How is it still considered "retro" if almost every team has an old-timey jersey they wear all the time? Retro is the NHL's "now". |

Despite the many conflicts between our two clubs, I will never stop respecting that stache. |

This is what it's come to? Camp starts tomorrow and we are reading blogs on the decision to use the retro's as the 3rd jersey. Just....sad. |

If anyone cares or is interested, I was at the Young Stars and just got back last night and here are my impressions:
Jankowski- looked the most NHL ready. Confident and in control. Made smart plays especially defensively. Good vision and face off ability. Needs more finish. He created chances but had a tough time putting it in the net.
Tkachuk- will be a terror when he makes the team. He showed flashes of his skill, tenacity and physicality. Decision making could use time as he picked bad spots to take penalties. But he will look great with Bennett in a couple of years.
Pollock- Didn't really stand out too much for me. He does have a solid looking 200ft game. Like Janko, he made some smart D reads but I just didn't see much Offensively other than creating room for his linemates.
Mangiapane- again, didn't really stand out for me. He showed some flash, but nothing consistent. When he did show, though, he looked NHL calibre.
Phillips- I like this kid. He has awesome skill. He gets knocked off the puck easily but is tenacious enough to keep going after it. Great shot and vision. He showed some solid back-hand passing.
Tuulola- again, I love this kid as well. There wasn't one scrum or moment after the whistle that he didn't get involved. You could tell he was getting under the skin of opposing players because he always had someone push him. Decent skills too. I really wish Huska gave him time with Janko and Tkachuk.
Burke- showed some good skills. I hope he gets an invite to main camp and a contract to at least play AHL.
Lomberg- stood out more that anyone. He had more affect on the games than any other single player and in more ways than 1. He DEFINITELY earned a contract imo. He scored, he agitated, he fought, he displayed skill.... he aearned a lot of love from me in his play this weekend.
Aagaard- should also get a contract imo. He got better as the tourney went on.
Gillies, Parsons, Scnheider, McDonald- in this order is how they impressed. Gillies was by far the best. Just poised and confident and incredible skills. Parsons was right behind him. Scneider and McD didn't get tons of time but McDonald let in a couple he should have had despite the shots being pretty good.
Kylington- AWESOME skating but decision making needs help. Too many times he tried to get fancy as the last guy back and it caused a turn over. Another year at least in the AHL seems obvious to me.
Andersson- nothing spectacular, just seemed relaxed and confident. Good passes but is obviously still young and needs polish.
Culkin- is back. IMO he seemed the most NHL capable and ready. Smart plays, good positioning and seemed to lead the D core out there. Very stready.
Morrison- meh. I wish he could hit the net a bit more with that booming shot.
Dyukov- very pleasant surprise. I didn't often notice him which is a positive. When I did notice, it was me looking to see who made that great pass or D play. Pretty good skater as well. The puck moved the right direction when he was on the ice.
Kanzig- was better than the low expectations I had for him. Skating is looking better. Maybe there is still hope for him as a bottom pair D?
That's about all. If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to remember anything else from the weekend. |

Do you think Janko has a shot at making Backlund redundant this year?
If he can come in and show that he's capable of playing that defensive 3C role that Backlund's been playing and if Bennett is playing well as our 2C do you think we should then look at trading high on Backlund?

I think Janko still needs another year in the AHL to adjust to pro life. But I wouldn't be surprised if he usurped Backs by next year. It would be great timing as Backlund would only have 1 year left on his contract. |

Why does it always come down to trading Backs? Let's make sure Bennett is ready to be the #2 centre before we weaken the position. I know it will be because you don't want to pay him as a 3rd line centre but if Sam doesn't step up in his contract year then we don't have to worry about that. Give Janko time to lead in the ahl, let him take Stagans spot work his way up the line up. There is nothing wrong with having too many good centres. Geez we need camp to start.
T&A thanks for the breakdown of the young stars tourney.
Hey I see JJ getting some reconishion at the World Cup that Russell dump is looking better all the time!

He has raised the bar even higher with this tournament. It absolutely makes a difference, he has been arguably theirbest player on a team filled with #1 picks, against the worlds best no less. The longer they go, the more his agent has to bargain with. Im sure BT is a Russia fan right now. Including the exhibition games, I do not think it is a stretch that he has earned at least a half mil per just by waiting. He will sign, but I would be shocked if it is below 8 a yr now, and possibly higher than that. |

Arguably top 2 LW in the game and arguably the best player on a team full of future best players for their teams (at least the way he has played so far).
Why not? He is quickly turning into their best player since Iginla.I think 2 yrs + this tourney is enough to show his ceiling is only growing. Nitpicking over half a mil is pointless. |
